    • Cottage Cheese Toast

As a dietitian, I love that cottage cheese provides a good source of protein, while the combination of toppings adds a variety of flavors, textures, and nutrients for a balanced snack or light meal.

    🛒 Cottage Cheese Nutrition
Cottage cheese is an excellent source of protein and contains relatively few calories. It’s also packed with essential nutrients, like B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, and selenium!

This dairy food is high in sodium, providing about 14% of the recommended daily intake. Some brands make low sodium or no salt added versions of cottage cheese that contain less sodium.

    Ingredients

There are many different ways to dress up cottage cheese toast, but the base is always the same... cottage cheese + toast.

cottage cheese toast ingredients: bowl of cucumbers and red onions, one piece of toast, and a bowl of cottage cheese.
sliced tomatoes laying on cutting board next to one piece of toast, a bowl of cottage cheese, and dill.
one piece of toast on a cutting board next to a bowl of strawberry jam and cottage cheese
    • Bread - You may want to use a thick, sturdy bread like sourdough, but feel free to use whatever you have on hand!
    • Cottage cheese - Full-fat cottage cheese has a creamy, rich taste compared to low-fat cottage cheese, which might be helpful if you're trying to reduce your calorie intake. Either way, it's totally up to you.

Pro-tip: Cottage cheese toast is not something you want to make ahead of time. Don't add your cottage cheese until you are ready to eat or else it may get soggy.

    Savory Toppings

Savory toppings are an easy way to get your veggies in! Here are some of my favorites.

    • add an egg
    • pesto or marinara sauce
    • leftover roasted veggies
    • herbs (fresh or dried) like basil, dill, scallions, or thyme
    • crushed red pepper and a drizzle of hot honey for a spicy kick
    • leafy greens like arugula, kale or spinach
    • sliced fresh veggies like tomatoes, cucumbers, and onion
    • a sprinkle of pumpkin, sesame, or hemp seeds
toast topped with cottage cheese, cucumber, red onion and dill above a slice of cottage cheese toast with sliced tomatoes
strawberry chia jam with cottage cheese and toast on a cutting board

    Sweet Toppings

There's a reason cottage cheese + fruit has stood the test of time. People LOVE the sweet + salty combo! Here are some topping ideas for a sweeter toast.

    • fresh fruits - all the berries, peaches, cantaloupe, figs, pineapple
    • store-bought or homemade chia seed jam
    • drizzle of honey or maple syrup
    • a sprinkle of nuts, pumpkin, sesame, or hemp seeds
